JAPAN THREE VILLAS SURROUNDED BY WOODS ON SAGISHIMA ISLAND

News

Big has opened Not A Hotel Setouchi, a set of three round holiday villas designed in collaboration with the hospitality brand Not A Hotel on the island of Sagishima, in Japan. The three houses, characterized by sloping tiled roofs and courtyards, combine elements of traditional Danish and Japanese architecture – according to Bjarke Ingels, much more closely related than one might think – and will be completely surrounded by woods.

The interior will be characterized by large panoramic windows, with views of both the ocean and the nearby mountains, as well as of the woods, of monolithic hoarded walls, wooden ceilings, and stone floors. The common spaces outside will be developed around a fireplace, and each villa will also have a sauna and an infinity pool. A network of pathways will then twist and turn from each building into the surrounding landscape.

In the past, Not A Hotel has also collaborated with the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, who designed a circular villa with a roof garden on the island of Ishigaki.
